  • G'day NBA members. This is a notice for change to the apiary clear up day:

I posted a request on Wednesday for help with the apiary clear up this Saturday. Many thanks to those who said they would be there. While the sun is shining this minute, tomorrow's forecast is rain from 11 am onwards :-( So... the clear up day will be rescheduled to Saturday 29 July - weather permitting. I will send out an invite for your calendars. Happy beekeeping till then

Our bees are in serious decline. We have lost over 50% of bees through disease, loss of habitat and intensive farming. Many crops are pollinated by bees and without them we are in trouble. Please log into the Chuffed fundraising site and give generously to help create the Newbattle Bee Academy to train an army of future beekeepers to help stop the downward trend of bee mortality, and provide an ongoing sustainable environment for nature's amazing little helpers on which the world so heavily relies.

Heads up to check if the bees need supplementary feeding due to the rain in the past week

Posted by Helen Nelson, Saturday, 10th June 2017 @ 12:15pm

  • This note is to recommend that members heft your hives and put on a 1:1 sugar syrup feed if they feel light. Peter has flagged that the hives he is managing are all light following the recent rainy weather preventing the bees going out to forage and so using up their honey stores.

@Bee minders - thanks for checking the NBA hives you are minding and taking necessary action.

If anyone has comments or questions remember that you can use the Members Forum tab to reach out to the wider membership for feedback/guidance.

    Carry out a disease inspection.

It’s good practice to do a thorough disease check occasionally. Get to know what healthy brood looks like so that you notice when something is not quite right

If you are at all concerned don't hesitate to ask the Bee Inspector to come and check with you. Contact details for your local one can be found here

SCOTLAND’S BEES NEED YOU to tell their story at the Royal Highland Show

Posted by Helen Nelson, Monday, 22nd May 2017 @ 2:18pm

  • See note below from SBA requesting volunteer stewards for the Royal Highland Show:

    Dear Beekeeper

The Royal Highland Show is just a few weeks away and we need more stewards for the Honey Tent.  There will be large numbers of visitors wishing to hear about bees and beekeeping.

Although it’s our best chance to promote respect for bees and for beekeepers, there are simply not enough volunteers signed up so far.

Please get in touch as soon as possible – the attachment explains what information to send – and remember that your entry ticket and parking permit will be provided for you.

    See you there!
