We still have a way to go to meet our £25,000 target - Six Ideas for You to Consider to Help Boost the Total
A number of NBA members are now organising fund-raising events in their own communities to contribute to the campaign funds needed to set up the Newbattle Bee Academy as part of the wider Our Bees Need You effort. Here are some ideas that you might want to try to boost the campaign funds.
Car Wash - Charge your friends and family to wash their cars.
Five a Side Football - Challenge your mates to a five a side match - each member of the team pays to play. They can also get their friends/family to sponsor them.
Film Night - Create your own cinema and hold a film night for family & friends. Sell popcorn & drinks and charge an entry fee. Theme the night on your favourite type of film.
Games - Scrabble, Chess & Trivial Pursuits - For all those who love the challenge of a board game. Why not have a tournament?
Coffee Morning - organise a coffee morning, and why not make it a fair-trade event too?
24 hour fast - How long can you go without eating? Get sponsored.
Would you believe it? Campaign Funds have hit the + £6,000 mark. Enough to make a start on the refurbishment work on the WW2 hut that will become the Bee Academy. Negotiations are continuing with Newbattle Abbey College authorities as to when work can start. It looks like the second half of September is a distinct possibility. However, the campaign continues work to raise the finance needed to undertake the refurbishment work. We have contacted the Tesco Bags of Help grant programme which is funded through the money raised from the 5p bag charge in Tesco stores. Work will commence on putting together an application in the very near future.
You can make your pledge to support Our Bees Need You and The Bee Academy at:
Are you attending the monthly meeting on Sunday 13 August?
If you are, you will be able to pick up the first Honey Recipe of the Month cards. They will be available to collect from Sunday 13 August. The initiative is part of the fund-raising campaign to raise the money needed to refurbish the hut that will become the Newbattle Bee Academy.
A new recipe will be published each month to coincide with the monthly meeting.
The cards proved very popular when they were used at the Dalkeith Show recently.
The August recipe is for Caramelised Apples, Honey and Ice Cream - A divine medley of texture and flavour that's irresistible and easy to make.
Just to let you know that as part of the gas pipe installation to Newbattle Abbey College, there will be temporary traffic lights sited at the main gate as from Monday next week to allow the pipe to be run from the housing estate and over Newbattle Road.
The lights will be in place all week whilst this essential works takes place.
Apologies in advance for the disruption this may cause.
Here at Newbattle Bees it is a given that we love Honey Bees!
We believe that everyone should give something back to the bees that do so much for us.
Did you know:
Bees pollinate around one third of both fruit and vegtable crops
Honey Bee colony numbers have fallen over the past 50 years, mainly due to disease and lack of food for forage
We are passionate about looking after the Honey Bee and to further this we are working towards setting up the Newbattle Bee Academy
You can find out more and support us to do this by visiting Our Bees Need You campaign at:
The first 14 days of the Chuffed crowdfunding campaign are behind us. There are almost sixty individual supporters plus those that made a cash donation at the Dalkeith Show. The total raised to date is in excess of £4,000. It is vital to keep up the momentum if we are to reach our goal of raising sufficient funds to refurbish the WW2 hut at Newbattle Abbey College and turn it into The Bee Academy.
Latest from David Jack NBAC Caretaker As you may be aware, we are having a main gas supply brought into the college which entails digging a trench to lay the pipe from Newbattle Abbey Crescent housing estate. After much discussion with Historic Scotland we have been given the go ahead to proceed with these works. The works at some point may interrupt the normal flow of traffic in and out of the business park so in this case please use the main college drive as your way in and out. The contractors will be on site tomorrow 2nd Aug to commence work. Thanks in advance for your co-operation.
See below a summary of the Spring monitoring report from Fiona Highet SASA.
SASA is a Division of the Scottish Government Directorate for Agriculture & Rural Economy
Please find attached a copy of the report covering Asian Hornet monitoring in Scotland during the Spring.
For those who want the abbreviated version – we had over 40% positive responses, with NO FINDINGS of Asian hornet – a success! Many thanks to all involved, and I would be very grateful if you could carry out another trapping period for a minimum of 3 weeks starting at the end of July. The Crowdfunding Campaign - Our Bees Need You - is now well underway. The total raised to date is £3,790. There is still a way to go but it can be done. If you have not made your personal contribution yet please visit the campaign website at:
Today saw a very significant donation to the crowdfunding campaign for Our Bees Need You. Mike Brown & Dan Jones, from Scoffable.com, a Livingston based business donated £1,500 to the campaign funds. Mike & Dan run a very successful online business providing a takeaway food ordering service. They have grown from a two man band to employing 11 staff and having around one thousand takeaway outlets across Scotland available on their online ordering site at scoffable.com
The next time you are ordering a takeaway for either delivery or collection give them a try. There is no charge for the service.
